Infrared communication has a number of pros and cons and the choice can be made by analyzing them.

  • The advantages are the remote communication need not be line of sight, they are very low cost, based on encoding scheme the number of channels can be expanded, low power requirements etc.
  • The disadvantages are ambient radiations in the surroundings can interfere in the communication, need of a complex encoding scheme, sending a single packet of information can result in data loss or wrong interpretation,  not reliable in outdoor applications (chance of interference).

ABSOLUTELY NO. INFRARED IS VERY MUCH AFFECTED BY EXTERNAL NOISE. SO RF IS MORE PREFERABLE.
