Color Sensor Recognition Module is made of TCS3200 IC, a programmable colour light to frequency converter. Module consists of silicon photodiodes and current to frequency converter. Output of the sensor is square wave having 50% duty cycle. Frequency of the square wave is directly proportional to light intensity. Colour Sensor Recognition module can be directly interfaced with, Arduino Boards, Microcontrollers, and Raspberry Pi etc.

The module consists of 4 white LEDs and TAOS TCS3200 RGB sensor chip. Sensor can detect and measure different visible colours. Sensor has an array of photo detectors, each with either a red, green, or blue filter, or no filter (clear).

TCS3200 sensor has 8 x 8 array of photodiodes. Out of the 64 photodiodes,

  • 16 photodiodes have green filters
  • 16  photodiodes have blue filters
  • 16  photodiodes have red filters
  • 16  photodiodes are clear with no filters

The output square wave (50% duty cycle) frequency is directly proportional to light intensity.

S0, S1, S2, S3:

Using s2&s3, we can choose any of the four colour filters. For example, if we want to detect red colour, enable only the red filter photo detector array. 


Frequency of the output signal can be scaled to desired value by setting s0&s1.
